    Things change
LJ seems to be a place for the variously interesting, life changing, important and dramatic.

Everything everyone else posts seems to have at least some sort of point though. Even if it varies hugely between the 'I need a new kidney' all the way down to 'I have a hang nail'* everything I conjour just falls short of actually being worth sharing thanks to my ickle internal voice that asks me not to waste your valuable time.

*These are examples and may not actually be posts I have read.

However since sometimes this doesn't seem to stop others I'm turning off my 'is it worth it' editor and flinging this up at the screen to see if it sticks. It's not any of the four catagories above but just stopped me and made me think.

Revisiting for the first time in a long time I was reading the Evil Overlord List. Come on you know. Things someone intent on word domination should or should not do. It's a classic:

    http://www.eviloverlord.com/lists/overlord.html

Have a look at number 99.

Gone but not forgotten. My 3 and 1/2 inch friend.

No not that. Get your minds out of the gutter.

Ah. So that's what a Star Trek re-imagining looks like.

Review you say? Pish tosh. I prefer interaction and look forward discussing it with you all. Or at least as many people who see it.

I also look forward to seeing it again (ok bit of review there).

What is it that makes a man?
Arguably a better question is what makes a Lego man?

Now I'm away to investigate why I can't sleep.

Ideas for full on Steampunk exosuit are rattling around my head as we speak.

    An attempt to communicate
On the grounds that nothing I do is interesting (my own POV.) I rarely use this box.

However in a possibly misguided effort to integrate myself with the cloud at large I've decided that I can no-longer be trusted to determine that which is worthwhile and that which is not. SO following on naturally fro this will be me posting many things that come to mind. Without editing for value. I hope you are ready to have your time potentially wasted my chums.

Heck I figure it can't be much worse than alot of things on the internet.

Currently crossing my mind is how young Nick Cage looks in 'Wings of the Apache' a guilty pleasure of a film. A second string Top Gun with rotary wings.

Have finally made it through all of House MD. Up to and including series 4 anyway. I rarely cry at human dramas finding myself much more moved at Disney antics (But she can't love him - i he has legs!). But the season 4 finale did it for me. Not waves of shoulder shaking greif but a good long tearful 'Pull yourself together man' moment when Wilson finds a note. Should be vague enough for anyone more behind than me. I had striking parallels to my own life when I too found a note. Possibly art imitating life gave the situation a key in to my emotional closet. Anyway. House = Good. As if many of you didn't know this.

I'm currently slightly sticky after my weekly football game (Why - what did you think I've been doing? I'm a bland ball of innocence). First win for some time. To be noted - Not a natural cat like goal keeper. The second own goal convinced me once and for all of this. As usual my natural. . . let's call them 'talents' lay with getting in the way. I'm reliably informed this should be called 'defence'. However when I break down my performance, including one particularly leaden footed tackle leading to an opponents near concussion, I have to say 'interference' is closer to the mark.

Oh and yes I'm sure those that know ma well are still chuckling at the thought of my engaging in any sport at all. It keeps me out of trouble on a Wednesday night.

    What else.

Missing Gwen. This is foremost on my mind but I'm trying to put a brave face on it. Here's to the months rolling by.

Have booked ticket to see the excellent Marcus Brigstock(e) in stand-up come November and contemplating seeing Dave Gorman in February next year. Though it's on the 14th. Should consult with significant other on this in case other things need to b planned. Though should be ok.

I seem to be going to London to see James Marsters sing his little heart out on Friday. More on this later.

And that's about all I have right now. Feel that's probably not a bad update for the first in a while. If anyone wants particulars of events both recent and not I'll happily fill you in (ooh er) just leave a comment.

Get me - thinking anything I do could be interesting. Pfft. What was I thinking.

    Annoyance
I count it a good thing that this is the most annoying thing I can think of in my life but:

Who in the name of all that is wholesome glues together Mega Bloks?

I know they are the poor cousins to lego in many people's eyes and I'm accepting of that but that's not the issue here.

I have no one to blame but myself for ordering on ebay trusting that a description that says 'Some bricks parts glued together' may be reasonably expected to have a few. Say under 20% stuck up. But I'm sorry, the set is in the realm of 'most' or maybe 'all but 5%' and I am annoyed.

Some bricks rescued. Most defunct. Lucky it's one of two I have coming and an earlier arrival was better that expected.

On top of that slipped whilst leaving feedback so haven't been able to spleen vent there.

Anyway back to the point. Who glues a modular toy together thus removing a large part of its play value? That's the very height of pointlessness. I suspect the kit may be a shop display model. Which answers my question I suppose.

Ugh. I seem to have popped the bubble of my own rant. Which doesn't help. I do not want to be reasonable here.

    Grrrr.

Check your time machines for HumDrum levels next week:
Will you be bored on 5th or 6th or November?

I'm off work and have arranged to use one of these two days, possibly depending on weather, to go to Thorpe Park.

Those not given to habitual whiplash are welcome to join [info]omylouse and I for high velocity highjinks on whatever day we use. I even have 3 available 2 for 1 entry vouchers to entice you along.

Only problem is I not sure of the day we are going on. MetCheck seems to hint at Wednesday 5th being optimum.

    Who fancies it?

Best send me a text to advise if you are curious and we can thrash out some details.

One of the most scary things a person can face:
    GIANT SPIDERS!

But aside from that it's a blank page.

Feeling compulsion to type something but now unaware of what.

Suppose I could say I've just had my intarweb restored after a 10 hour hiatus. Must ring Virgin media to cancel the engineer they wanted to send after the pointless but needed call to tech support. Blah blah 'I'm sorry to hear that blah blah standard scripted blah blah special reboot sequence blah blah no lights ata allI'll jsut see if theres an area problem' and so on

Is there really any point in me mentioning another hopeless tech support call. We all know the words and can sing along.

Interesting point was that I tried told the fella I'd already turned the modem off and plugged cables back in tops secret special magical order. He then said that I should try it again. Bless. I treid to explain its not setting the net work was down so its either modem catastrophically failing or at their end. but no - call scripts will out.

DR who. OH well next weeks looks good.

Bought SciFi Now magazine. thought it might be good companion work to SFX. Jury is out. Not as fun or as funny. And not to be pedantic but it is not spelt Seibertron (pretty sure it's not but please correct me). Nor is it call A Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy. These are small proof readable things. Not trying to perpetuate the nerdic image of pedantaryness but these are important things arn't they? In a SciFi Mag?

Am off to sunny Romford with work on Monday. Joy. And I'm assured I'll like it so much I'll be back there on Wednesday and Thursday and Friday with sleepover. Marvellous. Have been told they might try to up my hotel from the scintialting travelodge. I don't mind but it worries me that it worries them. Wonder if I take the PS@ and a disc selection I'll be able to use them?

Other then that not much to report. Shopping today yeilded noew boooring black business shoes and a nephewtastic birthday gift which I must get posted.

Did you ever have the feeling that you wanted to go:
But still have the feeling that you wanted to stay? (or Satay - if you were feeling a bit chicken).

Well that was fun. This convention thing definitely deserves more investigation. Second under my belt and faces are becoming recognizable. There are acquaintances and friendships forming. Think my face was noted.

Bit of a Whole General Mish-Mash (WGMM). I don't remember everything in detail and I'd not want to bore you with the whole. Points of interest:

Realizing I'm not in kansas anymore when during the panel on space battles kinetic impacts were being discussed. A fella mentioned that when he designed the windows for the international space station that sort of thing was taken in to account. Many brains.

Saw DarkStar. Brilliant. Definitely recommend as the best thing featuring both sentient beach balls and sentient bombs. Not a hotly contested category I grant you.

Extremely pleasant to have my chum Robin there. Who had, I'm assured, a grand time and left a noted hole when he left early.

Hot tub - highly recommended but armored socks should be on your packing list. I can truly say I left a part of me in Hinckley.

The British attitude of tinkering is alive and well. The designing of a Runabout Item was heavy on the physics but it's people who think like Brian Parsons who truly amaze me. Long may he redesign and one day who knows, Frank Whittle and Sir Christopher Cockrell might be making room at the table.

Won Music Quiz. As much through luck of an additional team member as anything. Wish I could remember his name LuckyKaa might. My thanks to you. Dune/Brian Eno. Nothing's forgotten.

The Pub quiz on day one. 'True knowledge exists in knowing that you know nothing. And in knowing that you know nothing, that makes you the smartest of all.' I know too much to be knowledgeable but don't know enough to know I'm smart. I look forward to being back in the mundanevesrse where I'm the one eye'd man.

BeerMat has presented a theory deserving of attention. Need a room, with tables and chairs tea and coffee with moderator for volume control. Where people can go and be. Think the Rotunda but not a through fair, so hopefully a bit more listenable.. Things can be discussed. Rolling conversations at tables but with out a planned agenda. Hrm Not sure If I'm presenting it well here. BeerMat may well be able to regale in a better fashion. Seemed like a good Idea anyway.

Must make a point of seeing a cabaret. 2nd con and missed both. I hear great things but lounging requires less effort. Never mind there's always a next time.

Speaking of next time: Eastercon or Teledu? (Teledu's probably, Eastercon's a stretch, I suppose you'll all queue up to say both :@P)

    Short things of note:
    Purple Peril - Fantastic voice.
Permanent markers and transfer printing - Totally doable.
Kinder Eggs - They have special powers. Fear them.
'The Hub' is a better name than 'The Rotunda'.
Brivari - More palatable than I remember.
    Groundhog Day = 2 February.
Tentacles are not cold and slimy.
If in doubt 'it's sh1t' is a perfectly valid argument.
There's always more things you want to do at a con then you are able to.

There's probably more but concentration eludes me. Maybe more later.

My word. Forgot to say a msssive thank you to commitee and all who attended. Isn't editing great!

The bad first. I know it's not terrible as some news out there but it's all relative.

Went out on the town by accident last night. There, said it.

You know those moments where you teeter on the precipice. Looking over the edge. I saw the heaving throngs of Reading's premier Vodka bar before me (Revolution, In case you wondered, and our only vodka bar I hasten to add) and thought 'I don't really want this. I could be at home in a nice warm bath with a good book. But on the orders of my friends in I went.

Now it's only in the last few years I've found the enjoyment to be had by being sober in an inebriated realm. There are many giggles to be had watching what passes for dancing. Safe n the knowledge that it isn't me looking like a fool. Well, This time anyway. I've more than filled my quota of inexplicable hip based gyrations thank you. And I mean't dancing.

So why didn't I go home have a bath and read a good book? Aside from the party pooper style name calling I'd have had to put up with. Which is manageable of course.

Well point the first: I had a lift home. Thus saving me the chilly walk since the buses have decided to swap to a shedule where part of the route seems to exist in N-space (swear we have a driver who looks just like Adric) and the timings are more sort of guidelines than rules

Point the second and much more significant. I was on a massive high following the consumption of some first rate transatlantic comedy. So knowing they will never read this but hoping you will pass on my regards if you see them in the street I'd like to say thank you to:

    Rich Hall http://www.gosh.org/news/celebrity/comedians/images/rich_hall_lrg.jpg
    Who was supported by
    Craig Campbell http://www.comedycv.co.uk/craigcampbell/craig-campbell-2004-december.jpg
THough campbell's image doesn't do him justice since he seemed to have gone grey haired and stole grizzly adams' beard.

I have not laughed so much in months (previous week I saw Sean Hughes which was also a grand night out but these two some how hit my nerve). I'd strongly suggest anyone who thinks like me (you poor fools) try to catch either of them as the tickled my funny bone in a way that ought to be illegal.

Of course YOu could just wait till redemption where. Thor forbid, I may just try to regale you with some of their material. Or not. You might have had to have been there *checks tensical grammar and is satisfied* *check for the word tensical in a dictionary and is less so*

So that's more or less me for the past few days. Sewed a button on a jacket. CLeaned the fish as I couldn't take the accusing stares any more (not enough algae on the tank side to block them out). And for the rest of this weekend am off to impose on my parents for real home cooking and discussions about if I'm eating right/sleeping right/ok at work bless 'em

I wonder when any of you will stop to read this seeing as you are all probably picocon'd up to the nines :D

I'm sad to miss being there and will be sure to read most attentively the post-action reports.

    Lost Room
That was quite fun wasn't it boys and girls?
    7:35 pm
    Points of non interest
    Work is hard.

I know this is hardly news to many of you but at the moment it seems unreasonably so. Suffice as to say you can clearly never have too much end user testing. A test enviroment is never a true reflection of the end platform. Stress testing is vital. And when feedback comes in listen to it.

    Busy busy busy.

On lighter news looking forward to the conclusion of the lost room, the restarting of LOST (no relation), and the resolution of some mysteries in each.

Am being made to ponder attending Eastercon by certain influences. Sounds grand on paper. Let's see how Redemption goes.

And that really is all there is. No memes. No funny stories about strange people. I feel like I'm not holding up my end of the deal having made you sit through what amounts to pointless ramblings. *points and laughs - ha ha I made you waste 2 minutes* Sorry :(

And now it's off to wish my sister a happy birthday. Speaking of which one of you can expect a parcel very very soon. Sorry it's a day late (or several months if you count when I was meant to send it) but I'm moderately flaky about such things so it's a good thing it's on it's way at all :D

(You will need the volume on for this one folks)

On other news there is no news. Unless that itself is news? 'And the kitten played with that ball of string all day'

Looking forward to a nice weekend of limited responsibility and effort. Watch a little TV. Spring a little clean (very little). Nail up that hole at the back of my wardrobe where those pesky centaurs keep coming in. Wouldn't mind but they make off with the turkish delight. Which I don't actually eat but it's the principal of the thing.

Blankness of mind - but since I've started typing:
Just what exactly does one type on this thing?

What's so fascinating about life that I have to share it?

Piratical parties notwithstanding (thank you Those who hosted, those who turned up, and those who provided nibbles - you know who you are) It's all pretty quiet.

I suppose I could geek out about the my soon to arrive Lego Sandcrawler. But really that's just the sort of thing that requires I look in to getting a life. Sadly I don't think it will be compatible with my current hardware.

For now, much unlike the Midland ads of the 80's it is all work work work.

There's always Sean Hughes in Reading on the 10th to look forward to.

    And viva Redemption!
